Vulnerable groups—including children, women, and the elderly—were among the most affected by the humanitarian crisis in Palestine. Over 1.1 million children needed child protection services and psychosocial support, and more than 58,000 children had lost one or both parents. Women, particularly those in female-headed households, faced increased risks of gender-based violence due to overcrowding, poverty, and the breakdown of community safety nets. Our team made it a priority to protect these vulnerable groups, but doing so meant facing additional risks and challenges.
We set up safe spaces for women and children in displacement camps, providing counseling, education, and protection from violence. We also distributed hygiene kits and reproductive health supplies to women, who often struggled to access these essential items amid the crisis. One of our biggest challenges was ensuring the safety of these safe spaces, as they were often targeted by armed groups and settlers. We worked with local security volunteers to protect the areas, and our team members took turns standing guard day and night. We also provided emergency shelter to elderly residents who had lost their homes, ensuring they had warm blankets, food, and medical care. Despite the constant threat of violence, we refused to abandon these vulnerable groups—they were the reason we had come, and their safety was our top priority.
