The healthcare system in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, was on the brink of collapse when our team arrived. Only 19 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals were partially functional, and 63 of 145 primary health care centers were operating at reduced capacity, plagued by staff shortages and supply gaps. Over 16,500 patients, including 4,000 children, required medical evacuation, and many were dying while waiting for care. Our team’s mission to deliver medical aid meant not only providing supplies but also supporting overwhelmed healthcare workers and helping to restore basic medical services.
We brought in emergency medical equipment, including insulin syringes for diabetic refugees who had been forced to reuse syringes due to shortages, and trained local healthcare workers on how to use new devices. We also set up mobile clinics in areas where hospitals were non-functional, providing treatment for acute respiratory infections, injuries from conflict, and reproductive health issues. One of our most memorable moments was helping a pregnant woman deliver her baby in a makeshift clinic, using the limited supplies we had. The baby, named Layla, was born healthy, and her mother tearfully thanked us for giving her daughter a chance at life. Despite the challenges of working in a collapsing healthcare system, our team’s efforts helped save countless lives and gave hope to those who had lost access to essential care.
