When we established a temporary aid hub in Gaza, we were confronted with dire living conditions that tested our ability to operate effectively. Over 1.13 million Palestinian families were living in unsafe, makeshift shelters, surrounded by uncollected waste and running sewage, exposing them to diseases like hepatitis and gastroenteritis. Our team had to adapt to these harsh conditions—we worked in overcrowded spaces, without reliable electricity or clean water, and faced the constant threat of disease outbreaks. Seven newborns had died in February alone due to freezing temperatures and lack of shelter, a tragedy we were determined to prevent.
distributed warm blankets and winter clothes to vulnerable families, and worked with local communities to improve sanitation in displacement camps. Our team members took turns working 18-hour days, often going without proper meals or rest, but we refused to give up. We also trained local volunteers to continue our work when we were away, empowering the community to take charge of their own well-being. Over time, we saw a significant decrease in disease cases and a renewed sense of hope among the people we were helping. Adapting to these harsh conditions was not easy, but it taught us the power of resilience—both our own and that of the Palestinian people.
